The Creation Index: How 100 million people actually create with AI

The Creation Index: How 100 million people actually create with AI

Over the past year, the way people create with AI has changed. The evidence was sitting in our own lifetime data: 625+ million Gammas made by over 100 million people across 210 countries and territories.

So we took a closer look.

Today, we’re launching the Creation Index, our first proprietary, data-backed report on how people use AI to make presentations and other materials. It draws from anonymized, aggregated creation data from billions of sessions across languages, time zones, professions, and formats through May 2026, plus a creator survey from January 2026.

We’re sharing our favorite six slides below.

We now use AI as a thought partner to work alongside us.

In Q1 2025, 59% of creations started from scratch. By Q1 2026, it had fallen to 31%. Over the same period, creations that began with a user’s notes, documents, decks, or transcripts rose 68%.

We now use AI as a thought partner to work alongside us. Our data indicates that this shift happened July 2025 – generating from your own material overtook generating from scratch.

This mirrors a broad 2024–25 consumer shift toward grounding AI in users' own content (NotebookLM's rise, ChatGPT Projects, the "context engineering" turn) — a trend that Gamma users have also followed.

    Supercreators have distinct behaviors.

The Creation Index calls the top 1% of creators  “supercreators,” based 60% on creation volume and 40% on the share of their gammas that get shared or exported. Supercreators make 11% of everything on Gamma.

Supercreators use Gamma as part of their agent workflows, upload more, use connectors, create via API, and create custom themes.

Supercreators create more because of how they work.

We also found that they edit more than the average creator. They nearly double in number of revisions per gamma.

Most people are creating decks, but document creation is quickly growing.

Decks account for 89.7% of Gamma’s Q1 2026 creation mix and are 9 to 10 slides. Documents make up a smaller 6.9% of the Q1 2026 mix, but their volume grew 36.1% year over year.

"Documents" are not just text. Our brain reads a picture in just 13 milliseconds, and and people take in visual information faster than words. In fact, articles with an image roughly every 100 words earn 2x the social shares. AI has turned the text document into a visual one.

As the data-visualization market climbs ~11% a year with 56% of marketers now putting visuals in nearly all their content, people want visual communication everywhere. Documents is the growing format.

People created 1.31 billion images in Gamma in 2025

AI-generated images appear in 79.6% of gammas, while stock photography accounts for less than 2% of images.

Our users have created in many different styles, with narrative illustration accounting for 63.4% of AI-generated images on Gamma. Classic photo follows at 25.8%.

    People create during work periods.

Gamma was prompted in 205 distinct languages over the past year, and creation follows the local calendar. There were notable dips in creation according to local holidays.

    To note a few:

    • Brazil during Carnival

    • Vietnam around Tết

    • Germany over summer vacation

We see the most creation during the traditional work week, especially on Tuesdays.

80% of the creation happens during the traditional Monday to Friday work week

Thank you to every creator that has used Gamma. This is what we have found from our point of view of a much bigger change.

Come create with us! On Thursday, August 13 in San Francisco, we are spending a night actually creating. Think: hands-on creation stations (some analog, some AI) with good bites and drinks. No skill required, materials provided. Spots are limited and approval-based. RSVP here. Share on x | Share on LinkedIn
