Why we built it: Turning frustration into fluidity
As Deeni Fatiha, our Head of Product for AI, explains, the spark behind image editing came from a simple insight: even the best AI-generated images aren’t always perfect on the first try. “Maybe you generated a great image of a boat on the ocean, but now you want it to feel like golden hour,” she says. “Rather than start from scratch, we wanted to empower users to add nuance…to spot-correct, enhance, and personalize.”
In other words, Gamma sees editing as not just a fix, but a creative opportunity. Whether you’re perfecting a presentation image or making subtle visual tweaks to express your brand identity, AI image editing helps you stay in flow.
Spot-correct. Add flair. Animate. Repeat.
The new feature supports both additive and subtractive edits. Want to remove photo-bombers from a mountain selfie? You can. Want to make a panda smile wider while it sips a Coke instead of a piña colada? That too.
For those unsure of what’s possible, suggested edits offer helpful nudges. “Even if you think your image is done, you might see a suggestion and go, ‘Oh, that’s a good idea,’” Deeni notes.
And it’s not just about editing. You can animate, too — breathing life into your images with subtle motion. From blinking portraits to looping visual effects, these animations make your slides and stories more memorable.
Built for everyone, and every image
One of the most exciting breakthroughs? This feature works not only on Gamma-generated AI images, but also on any image you upload. “The AI doesn’t care whether the image was generated or real,” says Deeni. “It just sees what needs to be done.”
The feature lives in a chat modal, which was a deliberate product choice. "It's how people are used to interacting with AI," she explains, "and we're meeting users there." The editing process should feel genuinely conversational. The model will even ask you clarifying questions if it doesn't understand your command on first try.
The AI can also adapt its task based on the specific user request. If you say “make the dog wear sunglasses,” Gamma understands that as an edit. If you say “make it a cat instead, and put it indoors,” it knows that’s a new image.
Powered by the latest models
Gamma’s editing engine is built on the latest and greatest image models — including OpenAI’s recently released gpt-image-1, which unlocked powerful capabilities just in time for launch. “One of the biggest unlocks was better handling of text inside images,” Deeni explains. “Now users can fix things like misspelled signs or add written content that actually looks realistic.”
The timing wasn’t coincidental. “We had already planned our launch, but once the new GPT model dropped, we knew we had to integrate it,” she says. The result is an editing experience that feels fluid, fast, and surprisingly human.
What’s next: Learning from you
While the current capabilities are impressive, Deeni is clear-eyed about what comes next. “Sometimes the AI alters a little more than you asked — like tweaking the whole image when you just wanted a glow. And looping animations can be distracting if they repeat too often. We’re learning, fast.”
That learning mindset also extends to use cases. “You build something useful, put it in the world, and then watch what people do with it,” Deeni says. “That’s how we’ll refine this.”
