The Man Who Cheated Vegas And Almost Got Away
What We´ll Cover
In this presentation, I’ll be revealing exactly how we’ve written scripts that have generated over 6 figures from singular videos.
Yes, that is right - over $100,000 from a single YouTube video.
That’s not over a few months, this is from one video in a span of days.
What You Need To Know
Now - most people when it comes to YouTube think that some fancy edits or a stupid software like VidIQ will be the thing that grows them like crazy.
The truth is if you want to do this you’ll need to know how to:
  • How to hook your viewers so they don’t click off
  • How to add clips throughout the video so your audience stays through the entire duration of the video
  • How to avoid being boring in your videos and so your audience will stay long enough to enjoy it
  • How to convert your audience into a buyer without coming off as a sell-out
The Key To A Good Script
As long as you have viewers that are loving your content, refreshing their screens waiting for your next video, and commenting on how valuable and entertaining your video is - nothing else really matters.
Fancy edits are great, and thumbnails are important, but nobody will ever get away with crappy content.
Now - if you know anything about YouTube then you’ll know that it is a very dynamic platform.
Why Script?
Reason Number 1 To Script:
Write A Script So You Have A Better Video That Will Maximize Viewer Satisfaction
The Most Important Metric is Viewer Satisfaction
While AVD, CTR, and watch time are all great metrics to look at, there is one metric that YouTube looks at to decide whether they should push your video to a wider audience.
And that is viewer satisfaction
Viewer Satisfaction = How much people actually enjoy your video.
Viewer Satisfaction is measured by whether people leave your video feeling good:
- Entertained,
- Or they learned something new,
- Or it was an emotional experience.
And The Way that YouTube Measures this is with:
- 👍 View:Like Ratio,
- 💬 Number of Positive Comments,
- 🎥 How Long Do People Watch the Video For,
- 🗣️ Do They Share It with Friends,
- 📲 Do They Download It to Rewatch, etc.
Reason Number 2 To Script:
Save Time
Alex Hormozi Said This In One of His Recent Videos
He Also Said This
If You Want To Get Ahead of Your Competition, Listen To Those Ahead Of You
Time Savings + Focus Savings
One of my clients because he had saved his time even writing the script he had the bandwidth to close $40,000 in sales.
Time = money in business
Reason Number 3:
A Good Script Can Take A Barely Edited Video FAR.
Ok so… I need to write a script so the video performs better and i save time but…
This Guy Doesn't Script
This Guy Also Doesn't Script
There Is Something That You Are Completely Missing…
Those Videos ARE Scripted
They might come off super authentic.
And totally unscripted.
But when you watch those specific videos, the words that come out of their mouth have a lot of thought put into it, almost like they've been thinking about those concepts their whole lives.
Combined with their copywriting experience, makes it easy for them to go completely "raw" and still get views.
I guarantee these guys would have at least written what they want to talk about in bullets before they started filming.
What Is The Definition Of Scripting?
Definition of Scripting
For YouTube, Scripting just means Planning
Scripting a YouTube video doesn't necessarily mean writing out every single word (it could be that).
But it simply just means planning more.
Planning what you want to say in the hook.
Planning the direction of the video.
And planning the Outro.
Scripting is the work that you do before getting on camera that makes getting on camera easier.
A Google Doc Is A Script
A Powerpoint Slide is A Script
Source: Hormozi (duh)
Flow Charts And Drawings Are A Script
Even Bullets Points Are Considered A Script
Only By Scripting Your Videos, Can You Make Them:
  • Actionable
  • Effortless to consume
  • Show your personality
  • Have a feel-good factor
  • Entertaining and humorous
  • Give the viewer exactly what they want
  • Cater to a new audience and your existing audience at the same time
Should You Completely Write Out Your Scripts?
There are 2 ways to write out a script:
  1. Bullet points
  1. Completely fleshed out
How to know which one is for you:
Write Bullet Points if…
  1. You’re coherent on camera
  1. Your content is less formal and more conversational in nature.
  1. You have a good memory and can remember the key points you want to cover without a full script.
  1. Your video is relatively short and doesn't require a complex narrative or structure.
  1. More personal brand, not documentary
Write Out A Full Script if…
  1. You want to ensure that you cover all the necessary information and don't forget any important points.
  1. You have a tendency to ramble or go off-topic when speaking without a script.
  1. You are not confident in your ability to speak off-the-cuff or improvise effectively.
  1. You need to include specific data, and quotes.
  1. You want to practice and refine your delivery before recording.
My Professional Opinion
From writing over 500 scripts in the span of 6 months, a combination of bullet point scripts and fully fleshed out scripts,
The best performing scripts are the ones that are fleshed out word for word.
You spend less time on camera.
Less time editing.
And the script is more actionable, informative and entertaining.
And One Last Thing Before We Cut To The Real Sauce
Just Like How You Need To Be Able To Taste Food Before You Learn How To Cook
To Actually Write A Good Script, We Need To Know What A Good Script Looks Like. And that's why you need to understand…
What Makes A Good Script… A Good Script?
I always follow these 4 criteria to determine if my video is good:
  1. Is the language used incredibly simple?
  1. Does the script give the audience exactly what they want?
  1. Would you pay $100 for your video?
  1. Would you watch this video?

Now Let's Talk About How To Script A Video
Most People Go Straight Into Writing The Script
And then they will decide what their title wants to be, which is the complete wrong way to go about it.
You want to determine what the title of the video is first, before you even get into scripting the video.
Because the title will set the expectations for the video.
And the script has to meet the expectations.
You cannot meet the expectations without knowing what they are.
It's like going to your girlfriend's parents house without your girlfriend telling you what her parents are like.
Total disaster.
1. Start with the Idea/Title
The Different Types Of Video Ideas
The 4 types of YouTube videos that we will be scripting
It is important to understand which type of video we are scripting before we even get to scripting. We don’t want to be scripting the wrong type of video with the wrong angle.
  1. Viral VSL
  1. Story Videos
  1. Challenge Videos
  1. Documentary Videos
Viral Video Sales Letter
  1. Viral VSL (Video Sales Letter)
  • A video designed to sell a product or service in an engaging "storytelling" format that compels viewers to buy.
  • Often aims to go "viral" by being very shareable. Uses persuasion techniques to make an emotional connection and convince viewers they need the product.
  • Video could also be more value-based, but we are selling the viewers on a set of beliefs every time
Story Video
  • A narrative-driven video that tells a compelling story, often focusing on the journey or character arc of a protagonist.
  • Uses storytelling elements like drama, conflict, resolution, etc. to draw viewers in and evoke emotion. The story is the main focal point.
Challenge Video
  • A video where the creator takes on some kind of challenge, stunt, or experiment.
  • Entertain through the creator's reactions and commentary while undertaking the challenge.
  • This is technically also a viral VSL because the challenge videos are also meant to sell the viewers on a set of beliefs to buy a product
Documentary Video
  • A nonfictional, informational video that documents events, people, places, or ideas from real life. Typically aims to educate or convince viewers about a topic, person, event, etc.
  • Uses interviews, facts, statistics, etc. presented through narrative framework and compelling footage.
  • Goal is informing or revealing deeper insight.
You NEED To Know What Type of Video You Are Scripting So That You Can Write It In The Right Way
How Do You Find These Video Ideas?

Outliers = Videos That Are Performing Above Average
A Great Way To Come Up With Video Ideas Is To Take Inspiration From What Is Already Working on YouTube Rather than Coming Up With An Idea From Thin Air That Could Completely Flop
I've Done It Too
And It Works.
The 4 Ways To Apply Outlier Theory
Look for videos from:
  1. Small creators that have videos that are clear outliers
  1. Big creators in your niche
  1. Videos from adjacent niches performing well
  1. Videos from broad niches performing well
Small Creators That Have Outlier Videos
Example: Dropshipping
Big Creators in Your Niche
Example: Dropshipping
Videos from Adjacent Niches
Adjacent Niches refers to niches that are similar or closely related to each other.
Examples are Facebook Ads and Cold Email because they are both ways to get clients.
Videos from Broader Niches
Example: Alex Hormozi in The Business Niche…
Example: To YouTube Growth
Example 2: From Coding…
Example 2: To Business
The 4 Ways To Apply Outlier Theory
Look for videos from:
  1. Small creators that have videos that are clear outliers
  1. Big creators in your niche
  1. Videos from adjacent niches performing well
  1. Videos from broad niches performing well
How Do You Find These Outliers?
1. Be on YouTube a Lot
2. Use ViewStats.com

Outlier Video Formats

This list is not meant to be exhaustive and I will continue adding to this list every week.

Action Items
  1. Go To YouTube or use Viewstats.com
  1. Search for these outliers
  1. Write 100 Video Ideas/Titles
  1. Filter Down to the Top 10 Ideas
  1. Pick one of them to create for your video
Now That We Have The Idea, Step 2 is…
2. Do Research for Your Video
Research
Market research allows us to find what videos have been made about a certain topic and to find what videos people want to watch now.
Here are some of my favorite ways to do it:
Scroll The Comment Sections to Figure Out What People Are Saying.
The Comment section is the only way for an audience to communicate with a video and creator within YouTube.
You can figure out:
  • What parts of a video people like?
  • What do people have opinions about?
  • What kind of content they want?
This will show you what kind of videos people want to watch.
Example of Using Comments
I Found This Comment
Thesis: Create A Shorter, More Remarkable Video To Get The Same, If Not Better Results
Action Items
1. Find The Top Creators In Your Niche.
2. Sort their Videos By ‘Most Popular’ And Study Each Video.
Because If They Have The Most Subscribers in Your Niche, They Must Be Doing Something Right.
Watch Each Video and Look Out for:
  • What type of creative format is it?
  • What emotion do the thumbnail + title bring out?
  • What made the hook effective?
  • What made the storytelling effective?
  • Why did most viewers watch it till the end?
Do this for enough channels, and you will be able to reverse engineer the success of their videos and apply the same concepts to your videos.
The goal is to find the reasons for their success, model it and improve on it.
You need to identify why those videos work, model the good parts, and integrate your own knowledge so that it is even BETTER.
Because If You Want To Win, You Need To Be Better.
How To Know When To Stop Research
There is no one set timeline for research.
But you can end the research phase once you feel you have all the information that you need/ you have digested all of the information needed.
3. Write The Hook
The Job of The Hook Is To Do 2 Things:
  • Validate the click on the video
  • Create intrigue so that they want to watch the rest of the video
You have less than 30 seconds before the viewer decides to watch the rest of the video or continue watching till the end.
For YouTube specifically, the first 30 seconds is where the drop off in viewers is the most.
So we must optimize for them to stay with a strong hook.
If you nail the hook, your retention in the first 30 seconds will be upwards of 50-60%.
Elements of An Effective Hook
The goal of the hook is to do one thing:
Reel the viewer in to watch the rest of the video
Meaning…
We want the hook to be
  1. Clear
  1. Engaging
Avoid These if You Want A Great Hook:
  1. Jargon (Avoid words like prospect, clients, ROAS, etc)
  1. Over-explaining (selling the video too hard)
  1. Excessive Credentials (credentials when not necessary)
We need to be conscious about the kind of viewer that will click on the video, and how we can use language to appeal to them.
Simple Language
Also, when you are writing the hook, you want to use language that appeals to a wide audience.
And that means keeping the language-use below a 5th grade reading level.
Words like “Prospect” or “ROI” should be replaced with “Customer” or “Returns” respectively.
That way - we can cast a wide net and cater to as large an audience as possible.
Hook = First Line + Introduction
First Line
The 10 Types Of First Liners
  1. The Question Hook: “Have you ever wondered what would happen to your business if you sent 1,000,000 emails?”
  1. The Shocking Statement: “You’ve been working out wrong this whole time.”
  1. The Storytelling Hook: “I went from -$150,000 in debt to over $5 million in just 3 years. This is my story.”
  1. The Preview Hook: “Watch me turn $100 into $10,000 trading stocks in 24 hours.”
  1. The Personal Connection: “In my college days, I suffered from anxiety.”
  1. The Statistic or Fact Hook: “90% of businesses shut down after the first 3 years.”
  1. The Challenge Hook: “I scaled 4 E-Commerce stores from 6 to multi 8-figures in the past 3 years to prove it’s not luck.”
  1. The Quotation Hook: “Alex Hormozi said that if he were to start over again, he’d start a service-based business.”
  1. The Metaphor Hook: “You are a hunter.”
  1. The Proof Hook: 'I've Generated $10,000,000 for my clients combined using cold email.'
Introduction
The Goal of the Introduction Is To Do 3 Things:
  1. Give context to the video
  1. Set the stakes
  1. Establish the main payoff of the video
The introduction is the bridge between the hook and the main content of the video.
And the payoff is what the viewer will get/learn when they watch the video.
Action Item:
When You're Writing The Hook, List Out What Questions The Viewer Will Have When They See The Title And Thumbnail.
And the introduction needs to answer all of these questions in order to set proper expectations.
Example: Alex Hormozi's $100M Cold Email Strategy
The most probable questions that the viewer would have from seeing this on the homepage are:
  1. How did Alex’s cold email strategy make him $100M?
  1. Is his cold email strategy effective?
  1. Is it easy to implement his strategy?
  1. Can I use it to make money for my business?
Answer All The Questions
The resultant script is this:
‘Alex Hormozi uses cold Outreach to generate zillions of leads across his portfolio companies without lifting a finger. And today I'm going to be revealing Alex Hormozi's full cold email strategy. This is the exact strategy that saved his company Gym Launch during a time when it seemed like he was about to go bankrupt. So, how does Alex Hormozi do it? I've spent the last week breaking down Alex Hormozi's cold email strategy, so you don't have to. I'll boil it down to four key steps that make his cold email strategy effective.’
For reference:
  1. How did Alex’s cold email strategy make him $100M?
  1. Is his cold email strategy effective?
  1. Is it easy to implement his strategy?
  1. Can I use it to make money for my business?
*colours are corresponding to the questions answered*
Why This Hook Works
  • We answered every question
  • ‘Zillions of leads’ is noteworthy which will immediately catch the viewer’s attention
  • The introduction lays out the payoffs for what the viewer will learn from the rest of the video
  • Made it easy to consume in 4 key steps
Every Line in The Introduction Has A Purpose.
If Any Line Doesn’t Reel The Viewer In To Listen To The Next Line, it Should Be Cut.
You Have to Be Precise With Your Language.

There is some context that you have to consider when writing the hook of a video:

4. How To Write A Body
Body
This section will determine whether the viewer actually finds the video valuable.
But to keep the viewer engaged, we want to insert subpoints into the video.
In an educational video, each subpoint is what the viewer will learn:
  1. Start with an idea
  1. Create the thumbnail
  1. Write the script
Open Loop
Completely explaining each point is like giving your audience a reward, and they feel good once they have learned each new step.
The job of the script is to present each step as more important than the previous one so that the viewer will stay anticipating each next step.
We do this by creating an open loop.
Open Loop = Transition With Building Curiosity
A simple outline that you can use to write the body section of your video is this:
Open Loop -
Point 1:
Open Loop -
Point 2:
Open Loop -
Point 3:
How To Execute It
Let’s say with the points I mentioned:
Open Loop
Point 1: Come up with a great video idea
Open Loop
Point 2: Create a title and thumbnail
Open Loop
Point 3: Scripting
Script The Open Loops
We then want to script out the open loops, which are essentially transitions from one payoff to another
Open Loop - The first step is the one that is by far the most important and yet also the most overlooked.
Point 1: Come up with a great video idea
Open Loop - But after coming up with ideas, there is one thing that YouTubers will completely neglect and leave till the end of the video creation process, when in reality it should actually be one of the first things that you do.
Point 2: Create a title and thumbnail
Open Loop - This next step I’m about to share with you is perhaps the most disregarded step of all of them, and yet is the one that drives the most results.
Point 3: Scripting
Scripting The Actual Content
Start With Bullets
Now, when you are scripting out the explanation for each point, you start off by writing bullets:
To write out the bullet points, use assumptive questions:
Ask youself - What questions will the viewer have for this section?
Scripting with Bullets
For example, if I were to script out point 1: Come up with a great video idea, the main questions that I want to answer in my script are:
  1. Why is a great idea important?
  1. What is proof that a great idea is important?
  1. Did anybody credible say that a great idea is the first step?
  1. How do I come up with a great idea?
These Are The Bullets I'd Write:
  1. Why is a great idea important?
2. What is proof that a great idea is important?
3. Did anybody credible say that a great idea is the first step?
4. How do I come up with a great idea?
  1. A great idea get you millions of views with only a few more hours of effort, compared to filming 100s of additional hours of mediocre content.
  1. If you look at Mr. Beast’s channel, he uploaded 22 videos in 2023. If he wanted to, he could have uploaded 1 video a week. But he decides to put 3x more energy into his best video ideas because the idea behind the video is that important.
  1. Play Mr. Beast Clip saying that the idea is important
  1. Write 100 ideas and narrow down to a handful of ideas
Write The Full Thing
At This Point, We've Completed:
  1. Doing Research
  1. Writing The Hook
  1. Writing Bullet Points
Now Put It All Together In A Full Script
And When You're Putting It All Together, One of The Things That I Am Always Thinking About Is… The Level of Storytelling
Steve Jobs Once Said:
"The most powerful person is the storyteller."
Stories Are Powerful
Stories have the power to capture and hold people's attention.
They can make complex ideas or dry information more engaging and memorable.
Stories evoke emotions, which can help your audience connect with the content on a deeper level. Emotional connections can lead to better understanding and retention of information.
Stories make the content more relevant and meaningful to their lives.
Stories are great.
The Most Common Misconception is That You Can’t Have Storytelling in An Educational Video.
But in educational videos, storytelling can be the moat.
You can build a whole channel off the quality of storytelling.
Example: My First Million
This channel is a business podcast by 2 tech startup founders. They are excellent at storytelling and making seemingly boring ideas seem interesting to a niche audience.
5 Storytelling Structures
Storytelling Tip 1 - Hero's Journey
Storytelling Tip 2 - Somebody, wanted, but, so, then
Somebody is replaced by the name(s) of the main character(s).
Wanted is followed by that character’s motivation or what he desires.
But introduces the conflict.
So outlines the events that worsen the problem through rising action.
Then reveals how the problem is ultimately solved/resolved
For example, Cinderella Can Be Summarized Like This:
S – Cinderella
W – Wanted to attend the King’s ball.
B – But Cinderella’s stepmother forced her to do chores to keep her from going.
S – So, her Fairy Godmother helped her do the chores and get her to the ball.
T – Then she met her Prince Charming.
Storytelling Tip 3 - Start With The End In Mind
What Emotion Do You Want The Viewer To Feel?
Storytelling Tip 4 - What’s The Essence of Your Story? If you know that, you can build from there.
Ask yourself: what are you really trying to say (in as few words as possible).
Strip away everything that distracts from that goal.
Concise in your story.
Storytelling Tip 5 - Create Contrasts
Use the “what is vs. what could be” framework.
First, describe the reality (“what is”).
Next, describe the potential future (“what could be”).
This framework forces you to create contrasts to craft a captivating narrative.
5. How To Write An Outro
Outros + CTAs
The Call-To-Action is a prompt at the end of the video to get the viewer to take what action you want them to take.
There are 3 types of CTAs:
  • Sell them on watching another video
  • Sell them on liking and subscribing
  • Sell them on your offer/product pitch
Don't Use Like + Subscribe
If the content is valuable enough, the viewers will like and subscribe on their own.
You Don't Need To Pitch Your Offer Unless It's a 40-min+ Long Video
In general, we only pitch our offer in a 40min+ video.
That is because once the viewer has gotten massive amounts of value from your video, only then do you have permission to pitch.
If your video is 10-20min long, there isn't enough information transfer to justify a pitch.
Always Pitch To Another Video
When you CTA at the end of your video to another, the end screen clickthrough will increase.
And when viewers go from one video, to another on your channel, to another on your channel, it creates a sort of spider web that will solve all of your prospect's problems one at a time.
It also increases the watch time on your channel, which will boost it on the algorithm.
How Do I Write CTA To Another Video?
CTA Framework:
1. Hook
2. Curiosity
3. Action
Hook, Curiosity, Action
You want to hook their attention just before the end of the video because that's when they think there is no more value.
Curiosity means to create a knowledge gap which creates demand for what you're about to pitch next.
Action means the action you want them to take.
Example CTA To Another Video
E.g. ‘So that’s exactly how you can send 1,000 cold emails every single day on autopilot.
Hook: But there’s something that I didn’t tell you at the start of this video.
Curiosity: Everything that I just told you is completely useless. IF you don’t know how to use it to make money for your business.
Action: Click on this video (points to top right) if you want to learn how to get clients with cold email in 2024. I’ll see you in the next one.’
Is It Worth The Effort?
The typical end screen element CTR to another video on your channel is 5%.
With My Channel + Client's Channel, Using This Framework Our End Screen Element CTR is 15%.
That is 3x More People Clicking From One Video To Another.
So if you have 1000 people who watched your YouTube video till the end, 150 of them would click, as opposed to only 50.
And if you do this for every video, the number of people we get from one video to another will compound.
This only takes less than 5 minutes.
Pitching Your Offer/Product
Value Based Videos
For value-based videos where you have given a tonne of value (Full in-depth tutorials), you will want to CTA for them to your offer.
THIS IS ONLY APPLICABLE IF YOU'RE SELLING SOMETHING
  1. You don’t want to just tell them to go and book a call with your business.
  1. You want to hook them in and sell them on the idea of working with you.
  1. Create a logical path for them to working with you given the amount of work they have to put in.
Example CTA To Pitch
E.g. ‘So that is a full tutorial on how to get start signing clients with cold email.
No doubt, you can take everything that I have explained in this video and start running your own cold email campaigns and you’d probably never have to worry about when you’ll get your next client ever again.
But the truth is, it is much easier said than done. There is much more to getting clients from cold email than just this.
You have to make sure that your cold email copy resonates with your target customer, inbox is constantly managed so leads don’t fall through the cracks and that you pick the right strategy for your specific business and offer.
And if at any stage you make a mistake, your whole campaign is toast.’
(And only then do you transition to pitching your offer)
Avoid These Mistakes in Your CTA
  1. Recapping the points covered in your video - if they need to revisit a point they can rewind to the part that they missed
  1. Having multiple CTAs
  1. Not giving a reason for why they should follow through with the CTA and being lazy with it
6. How to Edit Your Script
Why Edit In The First Place?
The first draft will never be perfect. In fact, the first draft will be terrible.
It will be bad. And that’s ok.
But we’re not looking for perfection in the first draft
As Stephen King says: ‘To write is human, to edit is divine.’
Every script should go through 1-2 rounds of editing. We do not want to rush this process. If we do, even the edited version be trash.
How to edit a script:
  1. Incubate
  1. Write like you talk - Read your script out loud
  1. Download Grammarly
  1. Is there a logical flow from one point to another?
