Flagship Programs
Albania: We brought 8 Code.X instructors to teach Computer Science and Human-Centered Design to 70+ students during our 24-month intensive program, Code for Albania. Students built upon critical STEM and creative skills by planning, designing, and executing on a technical project which was then packaged as a presentation and portfolio piece. Our 14 graduating students presented their interdisciplinary capstone projects to representatives from alphaPlan (our local nonprofit partner), the Municipality of Korçë, and World Vision Albania. Code for Albania — Code.X Gaza: We brought 4 Code.X instructors to Gaza City to kick off YouthCode-Gaza, Code.X and Amideast’s 12-month adaptation of Code.X’s flagship Code for Palestine program that ended in 2022. Our instructors taught introductory programming and creative mindsets to 50 pilot cohort students, who gained both advanced digital skills and soft skills like problem-solving, critical thinking, confidence, resilience in the face of new challenges and opportunities. YouthCode-Gaza — Code.X 2024 Expansions: Code.X is kicking off two new programs, Code for Ukraine Code for Ukraine — Code.X and Code for Egypt, Code for Egypt — Code.X in July 2024 after a year of program development with local partner organizations.
Secondary Programs
Workshops: 6 Code.X instructors taught 200+ students across Ramallah and Nablus as part of a workshop series for AlNayzak Organization’s Tech-Talent high school program. This workshop series aimed to expose large numbers of students to computer science, design, and Silicon Valley. Each 4-day introductory workshop focused on specialized topics in programming and design thinking. Code.X’s curriculum was additionally translated into Arabic and taught locally for Tech-Talent in Gaza. Tech-Talent Workshops — Code.X Mentorship: 6 Code.X instructors mentored 50 high-achieving high school students in Jericho as part of a 4-day intensive summer camp for AlNayzak Organization’s Horizons Academy. Code.X instructors held small classes on creative mindsets and mentored students on the college application process, job training, and personal development. Horizons Academy Mentorship — Code.X Curriculum: Code.X began development work with AlNayzak Organization on a new Emerging Technologies curriculum for non-practitioners, which will cover topics around AI, Web3, ethics, and accessibility. The curriculum will launch mid-2024 as AlNayzak’s third mandatory course for its 500 Horizons Academy students across Jerusalem, the West Bank, and Gaza. Training: Code.X piloted a small training program to start a Gaza International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) team, partnering with Meshka and X-Camp Academy to train future IOI team leads. This initiative is returning as Meshka's multi-phase 2024 project, Solve for Palestine, open to all Palestinian high schoolers. Solve for Palestine has had 2,000+ student sign-ups so far.
"This was life-changing.
I [returned to Palestine] to visit my colleagues, who were students in my cohort and are now teaching new students as TAs. We're still in touch; some of us are studying here and some are studying abroad. Meeting everyone was very beneficial career-wise. Before the program, I didn't know about Stanford. Now I've graduated from Stanford with soon-to-be 2 degrees. It's not just about knowing about the university, but receiving the advice and motivation to go ahead and apply." Akram graduated from Code for Palestine student in 2017 and from high school in the West Bank in 2018. He returned to TA for Code for Palestine every year since graduation and has expanded his interest in teaching as a TA for Stanford's Computer Science department. Outside of teaching, Akram has explored AI and CV research via grants with the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL). Akram Stanford University '22B.S. Computer ScienceM.S. "Without Code for Palestine, I wouldn't have gone into tech.
It's been a great experience and made me realize I want to continue this field in university. Code for Palestine helped me to understand what I want to do with my future, and it's something I won't ever regret doing. I've been applying for internships in software engineering, and I'll be doing one with Meta this summer. Code for Palestine made me want to try new things and now I've achieved this internship. I wanted to make sure others were able to experience the great moments I got through Code for Palestine, so that's why I've been TAing since graduation." Basil graduated from Code for Palestine student in 2019 and from high school in the West Bank in 2020. He returned to TA for Code for Palestine every year since graduation. He competed on the Palestinian IOI team in 2019 and 2020 and has just finished his first internship with Meta in London. Basil Birzeit University '24B.S. Computer Engineering
“Code for Albania has broadened my horizons.
It allowed me to enjoy the company of a beautiful community of zealous, like-minded, teachers and learners - I have learned more from the students than I ever thought I could teach them. 3 years as a CFA student and now coming back as a TA, it has been, and will continue to be, the ultimate high of my year and the experience of a lifetime!”(Code For Albania alumni & returning TA) Elia was a Code for Albania student between 2020 and 2022 before coming back to TA in 2023.
"The program blew through my expectations and was honestly life-changing.
The students are forever in my heart, and the staff and TAs are always gonna be friends. … My heart and soul are better off having done this program, and I was honored to be able to help the students.” Nathan taught with Code.X for the first time in Gaza City as part of YouthCode-Gaza, and hopes to return for a future year.
"The students are why I went back twice.
I've kept in contact with many of them over the years, and it's incredibly rewarding to see them grow and continue to nurture an interest in Computer Science." Rory spent 3 summers with Code for Palestine as a Computer Science instructor between 2015 and 2017, building a lasting connection with his students in both West Bank and Gaza. He now works as an Engineering Manager at Nelo, with a previous role at Uber in New York. Before teaching with Code.X, Rory lived in Brazil writing software for Endless OS, a company focused on bringing computing to the next billion. Rory Stanford University '15B.S. Computer ScienceM.S.
